About the Author:
Sally Grindley is the author of many best-selling titles including Why is the Sky Blue? (Andersen) and I Don't Want To (Methuen). Shhh! won the Children's Book Award and was shortlisted for the Smarties Book Prize - as was Peter's Place (both Andersen). Her titles for Kingfisher include the picture books What Are Friends For? What Will I Do Without You? and Will You Forgive Me? and in the I Am Reading series The Giant Postman and Captain Pepper's Pets. An accomplished anthologist, she has compiled four Stories for the Very Young collections for Kingfisher, as well as The Kingfisher Book of Magical Tales. She lives in Gloucestershire with her three sons. Siobhan Dodds has illustrated many picture books for children including Charles Tiger, Elizabeth Hen and Babies, Babies, Babies.

PreSchool-Grade 2?Grindley draws together 10 original stories from respected children's authors such as Mary Rayner and Dick King-Smith. Almost half are set in the jungle, including Mary Hoffman's pourquoi story, "How the Lemur Got Her Tail." The strangest and most open-ended offering is Jenny Koralek's "Zebra Running," set in an unspecified but vaguely Middle Eastern locale, in which a zebra escapes and leads the townspeople to safety after an earthquake. In general, though, the plots are easily understood and predictable enough for preschoolers and early readers. The upbeat, light tone is ably reinforced by Dodds's illustrations. Her style recalls the work of the Ahlbergs and shares their ability to amuse without succumbing to cuteness.
