What is disappearing today is not just a certain number of jobs, or jobs in certain industries, or jobs in some parts of the UK - or even jobs in the West as a whole. What is disappearing is the very thing itself: the job. In fact, many organizations are today well along the path towards being "de-jobbed". People will have to learn new ways to work and the second part of this book is a career guide to the 21st century. Today's workers need to look instead for work that needs doing - and then set themselves up as the best way to get that work done. The book shows readers how to start thinking of themselves as businesses - taking stock of their skills and interests, marketing themselves to their bosses, upgrading the services they sell. It discusses in detail how corporations, society's and people's outlook will change in this jobless future. William Bridges is the author of "Transitions" and "Managing Transitions".

About the Author:
William Bridges, PhD, is the author of the classic Transitions (Nicholas Brealey), read by more than a quarter of a million people, and the bestseller Managing Transitions (Nicholas Brealey). The Wall Street Journal listed him in 1993 among the ten most popular executive development consultants in the US.
From Library Journal:
Business consultant Bridges (Managing Transitions, Addison-Wesley, 1991) has written an engaging and challenging book outlining how the changing nature of work will dramatically alter how we do our jobs. He persuasively argues that the present information-based economy demands more flexible employment models than a manufacturing-based economy. Bridges states that the emerging economy will not require a set pattern of work from individuals (i.e., a job) but sets of complex tasks, requiring different sets of skills at different times. He uses highly detailed statistics to buttress his arguments. His book is especially strong on the psychological implications of the changing economy, though it might have benefited from charts and graphs illustrating employment trends, such as those used in William Johnston's Workforce 2000 (Hudson Institute, 1987). Recommended for general and business collections.
