About the Author:

Brendan Kelly is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He holds two doctorate degrees: a Ph.D. in Mathematics (Number Theory) from U. of T. and an Ed.D. in Computer Applications from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The doctoral studies in mathematics were funded by a scholarship to the Sorbonne, in Paris, where Dr. Kelly did research in Quaternion algebras. In 1990, while teaching at the University of Toronto, Professor Kelly earned a doctorate in Education with specialization in computer applications. He teaches mathematics courses in the Mathematics Department and methods courses to intermediate and senior pre-service students at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Before taking his professorship at the University of Toronto, Dr. Kelly served as Coordinator of Pure and Applied Sciences for the Halton Board of Education in Ontario Canada. In his capacity as senior author for the Pearson Education Publishing Company, Dr. Kelly authored the MathQuest Mathematics Program (for elementary students) and the Addison-Wesley Secondary School Mathematics Program (for students in grades 9-12). Both programs have been the standard in Canadian Schools during the past two decades. From 1992 to 1994 he was an author of Addison-Wesley s Quest 2000 mathematics program for American students. He has also written mathematics programs for Houghton-Mifflin and McDougall-Littell in the United States. Dr. Kelly has authored more than sixty books including a recent series of five 96-page mathematics modules for the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training titled Impact Math. These modules were used to train 10,000 teachers across Ontario in the new Grade 7 and 8 mathematics curricula. Professor Kelly has spoken at more than 100 conferences and has been the keynote speaker at various conferences across Canada and the United States. He was the closing speaker at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Chicago at which there were over 20,000 in attendance. From 1989 to 1992 Dr. Kelly served on the NCTM Research Advisory Committee. In 2001 and 2002, he wrote educational materials for the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission to teach financial literacy to secondary school students. In 2012, Dr. Kelly spoke at the Teachers Teaching with Technology Conference in Chicago and the annual National Council of Mathematics Teachers Conference in Philadelphia. In 1989, Dr. Kelly founded Brendan Kelly Publishing Inc. that now offers more than 25 titles including secondary school mathematics books that help teachers use Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators and software to teach mathematics. His books are sold widely throughout the United States and Canada and have been translated into Japanese and Korean for sale in their schools. Professor Kelly's publications also include numerous articles in scholarly mathematics journals including a 58-page chapter on technology in the recent compendium, 20th Century History of Mathematics Education published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics based in Reston, Virginia. Dr. Kelly is currently writing a book titled Mathematical Literacy. From 2006 to the present, Professor Kelly has been working with Texas Instruments on the development of DVDs and books to support the teaching of mathematics using TI-nspire. These books have been written to implement the Common Core State Standards using this latest technology.
