About the Author:

Philippa-Alys Browne has created three picture books for children about animals: Kangaroos Have Joeys (Atheneum, 1996), A Gaggle of Geese (Atheneum, 1995), and African Animals ABC (Sierra Club, 1995). Her work has been widely exhibited, and her books have been translated into several languages. Philippa-Alys Browne lives in Zimbabwe.

Elephants & Emus and Other Animal Rhymes is a product of several nations. The author-illustrator, Philippa-Alys Browne, lives and works in Zimbabwe. All her picture books have first been published in England and then translated into several languages. Color separation of the art work was done in Italy, and the book printed in Hong Kong. The picture book is more striking for its flamboyant watercolor illustrations than for the brief accompanying verses from such diverse sources as A.A. Milne and Ogden Nash. Some rhymes are anonymous. The fourteen creatures - not all are animals - seem to have been chosen at random. Perhaps they are left-overs from Browne's earlier African Animals ABC. There seems to be no predictable pattern to the pages except for the whim of the artist. Opinions are mixed about the effectiveness of Browne's art. She has been widely exhibited and one reviewer raved that, "her spirited illustrations leap out in wildly incongruous hues." However, a parent to whom I showed the book remarked: "These stylistic figures could be scary to a small child." I find them overwhelming. -- From Independent Publisher
