"Strikingly detailed illustrations and some lesser-known animals make this more than just another lift-the-flap book...While some spreads give readers a visual clue as to the identity of the dweller, most will really test children's animal-identification skills. The small trim makes this exploration of habitats nicely intimate." -Kirkus Reviews

We are not birds but we can fly. We like to sleep beneath a leaf high in the trees. What are we?

Engaging riddles introduce key facts about each animal with more information in a glossary in the back. The perfect book for the inquisitive young naturalist!

A member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and an illustrator for the London Zoo, Maggie Silver has illustrated several books for children, including Nature Hide & Seek: Woods & Forests. She lives in England.

From Booklist:
First published in Britain, this lift-the-flap animal book challenges its audience to guess which animal is hidden behind the flap on each double-page spread. Children can lift the flap beside a rotting stump to find a snake curled beneath a stone or find an octopus inside a jug on the sea floor. The heavy glossy pages allow for relatively sturdy flaps and well-reproduced illustrations. Representing five continents and a variety of habitats from coral reef to desert to woodland, the eight animals spotlighted here will not all be familiar to young children, but the last four pages offer a short paragraph of information on each one. The book’s very large type and (usually) simple words make it accessible to beginning readers as well as younger children. Not a necessary purchase, but a nice addition to libraries seeking animal books accessible to preschool and early elementary-grade children. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan
