Post-Holiday Celebration

"Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?" (Luke 6:34).

The stretch between New Years Day and Easter can seem interminable. Not only have the year's closely compacted major holidays run their course, but many of us face unpunctuated routine in conjunction with harsh climatic conditions. Combine that with a daily round of usually late darkness early and early darkness later, and we can experience a post-holiday jolt.

But who says we need to stop celebrating? That a nose-to-the-grindstone, belt-tightening stretch is called for to balance things out? With reference to Jesus' rhetorical question, above, no one can make us "fast" if our perspective doesn't call for it. Our bridegroom may no longer be with his church in bodily form. But the reality is so much better as his Spirit indwells us in preparation for our celebration of his resurrection--the true high point of the year, of our individual lives, and of human history.

About the Author:

A former editor in the Bible Department of Zondervan Publishing House, Donna Huisjen has for several years enjoyed full-time writing and freelance editing, along with various volunteer activities.
