Matoh, known for her yaoi (boys’ love manga) series Fake, gives readers just enough gender swapping to keep things mainstream. Despite David’s playboy nature, he does seem to genuinely care for Marlo, whatever his current gender. The parents’ attempts to make Marlo into a “real girl” feel overly dated and, along with Matoh’s older art—which features cringeworthy outfits from the series’ original 1998 release—might turn off readers who pick this up based on the new cover art and final chapter. But those looking for a silly romance with fairly tame boys’-love overtones should like this as well as its newer companion, @Full Moon. Grades 10-12. --Snow Wildsmith
