This book offers a revolutionary approach to raise responsibility and promote learning that can be used in any school, home, or business setting. The book shows how internal motivation is more effective in changing behavior than any external approach. This fascinating, insightful book breathes a sound philosophy and way of thinking that empowers, instead of our looking to others for solutions (Stephen R. Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) Highly recommended for all teachers (no matter what grade level) as well as parents (regardless of the age of the child) (Library Journal, Vol.126 No. 1) This Second Edition Revised is an update of the proactive, totally noncoercive (but not permissive) approach. The teaching model is used around the world with amazing success. This system is different from current approaches that use external manipulations of rewards for appropriate behavior and coercive threats and imposed punishments. Discipline Without Stress (DWS) is life changing in both your personal and professional life.

About the Author:
Dr. Marvin Marshall an American educator, writer, and lecturer is widely known for his program on discipline and learning and his landmark book, Discipline Without Stress® Punishments or Rewards How Teachers and Parents Promote Responsibility & Learning.

He has founded a public charity to supply these books at no charge to every teacher of any school in the U.S.A. that commits to using his totally noncoercive (but not permissive) approach for one year. His multi-award winning parenting book, Parenting Without Stress® How to Raise Responsible Kids While Keeping a Life of Your Own; was written after numerous requests to write a book specifically for parents, grandparents, and others working with youth outside of schools.
His publications and presentation are how to in that they assume the objective is to promote responsibility, and he demonstrates how to do it. His system motivates young people to want to behave responsibly and to be motivated to put forth effort in learning. His approach relies on internal motivation, rather than on external approaches of manipulation by using rewards and employing coercion in the form of threats or punishments. A prime reason is that internal motivation is more effective in changing long-term behavior than any external approach.
His SYSTEM (not a series of techniques) is proactive, totally noncoercive (yet not permissive) and is based on the simple fact of life that a person can be controlled by another person or organization but only can be changed by the actual person. This understanding that only individuals can change themselves is critical in influencing others. He has presented to government agencies, universities, associations, school districts, and schools in 44 of the United States, in 19 countries, and on 5 continents. He has a world-wide audience of over 15,000 subscribers to his free monthly newsletter, Promoting Responsibility & Learning, which contains short articles on promoting responsibility, increasing effectiveness, improving relationships, promoting learning, parenting, and disciplining without stress.
His approach stemmed from his acquiring knowledge about youth as a parent; recreation director and camp counselor; classroom teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; middle and high school counselor; middle school assistant principal; high school assistant principal of both supervision and control and curriculum and instruction; elementary and high school principal; district director of education; and certification by the William Glasser Institute on Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, and Quality Management.
He earned his Bachelor s in Language Arts and his Masters in Business Administration from California State University, Los Angeles. He was awarded a Doctorate in Education from the University of Southern California. He was a full-time lecturer for over three years at California State University, Los Angeles at has lectured in numerous universities in the United States.
He holds emeritus membership in both the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association o Secondary School Principals and is a professional member of the National Speakers Association and the Global Speakers Association.
