About the Author:
Geboren am 18.5.1855 auf Schloß Paddern bei Hasenpoth (Aizpute) in Kurland; gestorben am 28.9.1918 in München. Keyserling wuchs als zehntes von zwölf Geschwistern in der patriarchalischen Adelsgesellschaft der elterlichen Güter auf. Er besuchte die Schule in Hasenpoth und das deutsche Gymnasium in Goldingen (Kuldiga). Das 1874 begonnene Studium (Jura, Philisophie und Kunstgeschichte) in Dorpat mußte er 1877 abbrechen ("wegen einer Inkorrektheit") und war damit in seiner Gesellschaft geächtet. In Wien setzte er das Studium fort; dort lernte erLudwig Anzengruberkennen. Bis 1895 verwaltete Keyserling, gesellschaftlich isoliert, die mütterlichen Güter Paddern und Telsen. Nach dem Tod der Mutter Ende 1894 und der Übergabe der Güter an die Majoratsherren zog er mit zwei Schwestern nach München. Durch eine Syphilisinfektion erkrankte er 1897 an einem Rückenmarksleiden und erblindete mit 45 Jahren. Von Ende März 1899 bis 1900 bereiste er mit den Schwestern Italien.
