About the Author:

The author of this book, Pierre Boulle, served in World War II in the Free French under General Charles de Gaulle. He was captured by the Japanese and worked as a laborer in Burma helping to build the bridge over the River Kwai and the railway. He escaped, as did the protagonist played by William Holden in the movie, Bridge on the River Kwai. He was a French man who never learned English so the books were translated into English by Xan Fielding. Pierre Boulle was born in 20 February 1912 in Avigon, France. He originally trained as an engineer but in 1936 he went to Malaya as a rubber planter. In 1939 he was called up in the French forces in Indo-China but on the collapse of France he fled to Singapore where he joined the Free French Mission. After the Japanese invasion, he was sent via Rangoon and the Burma Road to Yunnan to establish contact with the Kuomintang forces. There he infiltrated as a guerrilla into Indo-China, where he was captured in 1943. He escaped in 1944 and was picked up by a British plane. He served with the rest of the war with Special Force, Calcutta. He is the author of both Bridge On the River Kwai and The Planet Of The Apes. The screenplay to both movies was written by Michael Wilson. However, his name does not appear on the 1957 movie Bridge Over the River Kwai because he was on Hollywood's infamous Blacklist for being a suspected Communist. By 1968, when Planet of the Apes came out, the blacklist had been abolished so his name appears. During the McCarthy Era the real authors of a screenplay were on the Hollywood Blacklist because they were suspected of being Communist sympathizers. The people who were then called Communists are now called Democrats. After the war, Mr. Boulle returned for a time to Malaya and then went to the Cameroons. After that he lived in Paris until his death on 30 January 1994.
