Description:

Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE CASE OF THE CARETAKER'S CAT. New York: William Morrow, 1935. First Edition, first printing. An exceptionally bright Fine copy in its ORIGINAL PRICED ($2.00) DUST JACKET. The jacket has some chipping, creasing, edge-wear, and a small stain. A RARE DUST JACKET by any standard and virtually never seen. INSCRIBED warmly, and at length, in the year of publication by the author: "To Tee -- who is going to be autographing some books of her own before many moons -- and who will then owe the first copy of the first book to one who so keenly appreciates the rare talent she has. In other words, Tee, you gotta give it to the old sidekick who is stronger for you than horseradish." Signed simply "Erle" but on the front paste-down the author has also written: "Tee Rose with love from Erle Stanley Gardner, November 1935." A very small newspaper photo and biography of Gardner has been pasted to one corner of the front paste-down. Tee Rose, a young writer from San Francisco, became a lifelong friend of ESG and she always received his latest book in the mail immediately upon its publication. We have in stock quite a few of his presentation copies to her from 1934 to the early 1960s. THE CASE OF THE CARETAKER'S CAT is the seventh mystery in Gardner's Perry Mason series. After his employer dies in a fire, a caretaker hires Mason to allow him to keep his cat against the wishes of the men who inherit. When the caretaker is killed, Mason defends the woman accused of his murder. Bookseller Inventory # 001347
