This is Volume I (only) of the comedies of the Peruvian writer (1805-1871). An elegy by Luis Alberto Sanchez prefaces the book. Segura welcomed democracy after its independence from Spain in 1871, and was popular in his country. The oldest theater in South America, in Lima, was renamed in his honor in 1924. This is a pretty little volume (7" x 5") probably bound for a collector, with marbled boards and red half-leather with gilt title and bands on spine; the title page of the original publication is illustrated and printed in red and black.
