This original photograph shows King Gustav V and Franjo Puncec. Most likely, this photo is taken on Beaulieu tournament in 1938 in France. At this tournament Puncec played semifinals with Henry 'Bunny' Austin and finals with Fantisek Cejnar. Puncec won the tournament. On the back side there is a stamp of Photo studio in Paris and marks that show that this photo was in the photoalbum. Franjo Puncec (1913, Cakovec - 1985, Johannesburg) was a Croatian tennis player. He played for the Yugoslavia's team at the International Lawn Tennis Challenge, and later the Davis Cup, from 1933 to 1946. His greatest success was reaching semifinals of the French Open in 1938 and also semifinals of the Wimbledon. In 1938 he won International Tournament in Monte Carlo and International Tournament of Scandinavia or at Roland Gaross. 1939 he again reached semifinals of the Wimbledon. He was the first Croatian ever to be placed in the ATP rankings list and his best ranking was 4th place in 1939. King Gustav V (1858 - 1950) was a devoted tennis player, appearing under the pseudonym Mr G. As a player and promoter of the sport, he was elected in to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1980. The King learned the sport during a visit in Britain in 1876 and founded Sweden's first tennis club on his return home.
