Biography of the pre-war Mississippi Congressman, who during the war raised and served as the lieutenant colonel of the 19th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. Later Lamar was appointed the Confederate emmessary to Russia and was later sent to France and England. After the Civil War he was elected to both the US House and Senate from Mississippi. Under President Cleveland Lamar was appointed the Secretary of the Interior and then a US Supreme Court Justice. Good copy of the first edition. No dust jacket. The front endpage is loose, there is wear to the cover and some foxing to the page ends as well as 7 lines written on the page ends. Hinges are starting. Page tops are gilded. 820 pages.
