Description:

Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots Published: London 1830-1832 Medium: Hand-colored lithograph Dimensions: 14.5 x 21.5 inches (page size) Edward Lear's Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots, a total of 42 hand-colored lithographed plates, was issued in a limited edition of 175 copies between 1830 and 1832. Working in the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park in London, Lear was the first to draw his birds from life. Since he also produced his own lithographs, Lear's plates have a spontaneity and accuracy which is often lacking in sketches which have been translated into another medium. As Susan Hyman notes: His best plates, those of the large flamboyant parrots, reveal a rare sensibility, one that could combine the most exacting scientific naturalism with a masterly sense of design and an intuitive sympathy for the animal intelligence. Minutely exact in every detail of anatomy, plumage and colouring, the birds are portrayed against minimal backgrounds of lightly sketched branches, leaves and twigs.they endure as portraits of individuals rather than of species.(from Susan Hyman, Edward Lear's Birds, New York, 1980, p. 28.
