Hugo Black's odyssey was long, varied, unlikely, and remarkably successful. It began in 1886 in the Alabama hill country and ended in 1971, when Americans were demonstrating in the streets. As a United States senator from 1927 to 1937 and then for thirty-four years on the United States Supreme Court as its most passionate civil libertarian, Black fought for the rights and welfare of all people.

About the Author:

Roger K. Newman is Research Scholar at New York University School of Law. Born in Brooklyn, he was educated at Hunter College, the University of Virginia, New York University, and Cardozo Law School. He is co-author of Banned Films, a history of movie censorship, which was nominated for several awards. He has written for both popular and professional publications, taught constitutional law at NYU, and was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Riverdale, New York, with his wife, Ricki, and their two children.
