With more than 205 species of owls worldwide, this book provides a fascinating species-by-species portrait of these marvellous, sometimes rare, members of nature?s family of birds. While many of the world?s often-photographed owls are wide ranging in terms of habitat, many lesser-known species such as the Cuban owl and the Jamaican owl are found only in smaller, more specific geographic locations. Such indigenous species as the Australian boobook owl, found only in the islands of Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia are compared and contrasted with other North American, European, and Asian Species in terms of habitat, adaptability, and physical appearance. The book traces the evolution of owls and their place within the avian order ? both as predators and as prey. And, because many species throughout the world are threatened due to environmental devastation caused by the world?s hunger for wood products, this book is intended to raise awareness about the plight of many lesser-known or rare owls. The book features an extensive section detailing the range and ?conservation status? of every species of owl, including those on the brink of extinction and newly discovered species. (August 2003)

About the Author:

Jim Duncan is an owl expert based in Canada. He is adjunct professor at the University of Winnipeg and Director of the Wildlife Branch of the Government of Manitoba.

He has banded more than 2,500 owls during the course of his research for more than two decades and has published numerous books and papers on the subject.

Review:
David Ramsden MBE, Head of Conservation, Barn owl Trust: James Duncan's new book is a photographic feast containing a truly wonderful collection of stunning owl portraits and action shots. Whilst Owls of the World makes no attempt to present all that is known, the calibre of its author and the wise words he delivers place it head and shoulders above many similar books that adorn 'coffee tables' around the world. This book, above all else, encourages people to care about owls. As Dr Jim Duncan, a scientist, rightly points out "people protect things they care about...science alone will not benefit owls if people do not value them". To this end, Owls of the World is an absolutely brilliant book. "It is a knowledgeable and scholarly overview of the owls, written in a style that makes it accessible to the non-specialist, and illustrated with a mass of images, many of quite outstanding quality...thoroughly recommended! David Parkin/British Birds Magazine Dec 2016"
