MACIONIS/GERBER is the acclaimed gold standard of comprehensive Intro Sociology texts. Aiming to cultivate a global perspective and a multicultural view, Sociology has strong appeal and a lasting impact on Canadian students. In 24 chapters, the theories of sociology are explained in a clear and balanced way, and concepts are repeatedly applied to real-life events.
The 7 Canadian edition of Macionis/Gerber will have valuable enhancements that will focus on student learning and student success. For 2010, the MySocLab for Macionis/Gerber will be completely revised and will have a number of features that will increase student engagement and help students perform better on exams. The text also has a very robust set of instructor supplements that have been highly praised by users for many years. For all of these reasons, Sociology is the most authoritative and comprehensive introduction to the discipline available in Canada.

John J. Macionis received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. His publications are wide ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humour, and the importance of global education.
John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. In 2003, he received the Philander Chase Medal for completing 25 years of teaching at Kenyon. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in human studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and, most importantly, taught sociology to thousands of students.
In 2002, the American Sociological Association named Dr. Macionis recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as introduction of new teaching technology in the development of his textbooks.
Linda M. Gerber was born in Toronto. She completed a degree in nursing at the University of Toronto—before switching to sociology at the MA and PhD levels. As a graduate student, she was a consultant in highway planning, doing socio-economic impact assessment for a range of highway-building projects in southern Ontario. She also taught Canadian Native Peoples at York University’s Glendon Campus.
On completion of her PhD, Dr. Gerber spent three years as a research associate at Harvard’s Center for Population Studies before accepting a position in the Sociology and Anthropology Department at the University of Guelph. Over 26 years at Guelph, she has taught a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Professor Gerber’s research has focused upon Canada’s Native peoples, Canadian politics, and ethnic relations, but she has a broader interest in Canadian society (its demographic processes, its identity, and its regional tensions).
