In the eight pieces that make up The Amazon: Land Without History, which was first published in Portuguese in 1909, Euclides da Cunha offers a rare look into twentieth-century Amazonia and the consolidation of South-American nation states. Translated into Victorian English, which mirrors the rich and grandiose style of da Cunha's writing, this book offers a view of the continuously changing ecology of the Amazon, a testimony to the Brazilian colonial enterprise, and its imperialist tendencies with regard to neighboring nation-states.

From The New Yorker:
Euclides, a civil engineer turned journalist, occupies a unique niche in Brazilian letters. These essays, written after a 1905 trip, though they deal with topics like the hydrology, climate, and haphazard settlement of the Amazon, and the impossible lives of the rubber-tappers, contain passages that read like the letters of a brilliant friend. Their intricate sentences are animated by a tragic lyricism befitting the author, who was destined to be killed by his wife’s young lover soon after he wrote these essays. Even specks of the unconscious racism here, if impolitic, can have redeeming charm (as when Euclides says of the Tacunas, dwellers on the upper Purus River, that they are "born looking old"). These haunting études reveal a man who saw the Amazon as a place where violence and cruelty are as inevitable as the tropic sun.
