Joe and his dad both like plants but there's definitely something rather strange about the new plant Joe brings home one day from the flower shop. For that night, when Joe's in bed, the most amazing thing begins to happen...
A witty and unusual story with extraordinary appeal.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3 In this strange tale from Britain, Mrs. Alpha Centauri sells some peculiar plants in her flower shop. She gives an unidentified, unsalable plant to Joe, and as it grows larger, it grows hands and eats the other plants in Joe's lawn. Huge crystalline flowers bloom one night. An alien from the planet Zetron arrives, thanks Joe and his dad, and begins cutting the flowers. It turns out that on Zetron a terrible war destroyed all the vegetation so they depend on other planets to grow their flowers. Joe and his dad have a cup of tea before bed. Perhaps the lifeless feeling comes from the very laid back attitude of Dad and Joe. The message is commendable, the medium tedious. Tempera and wash illustrations have some humor, but not enough to rescue the bland text. Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, Wash.
