Black-and-white photographs of events and people appear on almost every page and reinforce the seriousness of the occasions. Although Miller supplies background events and an afterword about the Voting Rights Act of 1965, this book focuses on the bloody Sunday of March 7, 1965, when black citizens who tried to march peacefully from Selma to Montgomery were thwarted by police, who used tear gas and clubs and made arrests.
