This is a complete reprint of the complete 1961 edition containing all the contents of the original four volumes, with additions. Added are: Forward by Lord Birkett, P.C. - "Stick To A Stuff Gown" by Hubert Picarda, Barrister, an article about the author, Theo Mathew, which originally appeared in the New Law Journal in 1982 - A new appendix by Francis Cowper which reveals the identities of many of the characters in the fables. --- Forensic Fables appeared first in the Law Journal ( of London, England) and then in book form between 1926 and 1932. They have a timeless appeal and have delighted generations of lawyers and those who live or work with them. - The fables were published anonymously but the identify of their author, Theo Mathew, was quickly guessed by a readership with whom his reputation as a wit was already well established. The profession soon grasped too the identity of many of the legal figures on whom his characters were based. Of course, they are now gone, and while the astute modern reader will have little difficulty in identifying legendary figures of the past, this reprint contains a new Appendix supplied by Francis Cowper which reveals at last the true character of The Old Hand and The Lady Barrister as well as many others. The essential characteristics of those who practice law have changed remarkably little in the last half century and readers will easily find modern counterparts for these timeless portraits. There will be some who may even recognize themselves. -- The cognoscenti of legal scholarship will be delighted to find in this book confirmation of their longheld conviction that the art of legal indexing is no longer what it was.
