Copyright Mrs. E Mittelholzer 1941. Intoduction Louis James 1970. First published by Eyre&Spottiswoode 194. First published in Caribbean Writers Serien 1970. EDGAR MITTELHOLZER wrote Corentyne Thunder in 1938 at the age of twenty-nine while living in the small Guyanese coastal town of New Amsterdam "doing odd jobs for the customs; checking drums of petrol off-loaded from schooners, and even acting as cinema inspector at a frowsy little cinema." After many misunderstandings and accidents Corentyne Thunder was, finally published in 1941. Alt-most immediately afterwards he left for Trinidad where he lived until 1948 and set his second novel, Morning at the Office (1951). He finally settled in England and wrote many other novels. He committed suicide in 1958. Ramgolall, a cow-minder on the coast of Guyana, has slowly hoarded shillings in a canister in his but and slowly increased his herd of cows. Each of his two wives has been kept short of money and the fact that Sosee, a daughter by his first marriage, has gone to live with a white planter, Big Man Weldon, is a source of financial satisfaction. Sosee's eldest son, Geoffry, is light-skinned and ambitimis. He is mildly fascinated by his peasant relations. He starts an affair with his half-sister, Kattree, and ruthlessly drops her when she is pregnant, lest she spoil his chances. The book rides towards a crisis when it seems certain that another peasant, Jannee, has murdered the cheerful and provoking Boorharry on a dark night of thunder and lightning. Jannee's life is saved by an expensive lawyer, but it costs the life of Ramgolall. This book has had a stormy passage; war, fire and liquidation have meant that this first novel by one of the best-known West Indian writers has hardly been available before.
