Gr 5-9-An attractive overview. Six chapters cover the Southeast Asian nation's geography, geology, and wildlife; its diverse cultures and ways of life; European settlers and missionaries; the 1930 discovery of a civilization in the highland zone; the independent nation; and Papau New Guinea today. The text is a fine combination of expository, narrative, and descriptive writing that will motivate students to read further. Fox juxtaposes photographs and facts about traditional villages with examples of urban lifestyles. There's a wealth of information in these pages; the vocabulary is challenging but not overwhelming; and the ``Mini-Facts at a Glance'' section will prove useful for quick reference. Full-color and black-and-white photographs show the islands' spectacular scenery, cultural customs, unique flora and fauna, and cities and villages. The only drawback to this title is the regional map in the beginning of the book, in which Papua New Guinea is unnamed and is so far off to the right that it is difficult to locate. However, there is a clearly marked map of the country at the end of the book. A much-needed addition for report writers that will appeal to older ESL students as well.-Nancy E.
