Fifty-Four readings in this 3rd edition collectively show how race has influenced and continues to affect all aspects of American higher education.  This volume offers a comprehensive selection of seminal and contemporary publications that are situated across various postsecondary contexts. It is organized around six focal areas of study in the field of higher education: (1) History; (2) Students; (3) Faculty; (4) Curriculum, Teaching and Learning; (5) Organizations, Leadership and Governance; and (6) Policy, Finance and Economics. Also included is a seventh section devoted entirely to critical race perspectives on higher education.

Review:

"The third edition of Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Higher Education provides a strong and comprehensive foundation on the complexities and politics of race. Diversity as a characteristic of the student body and as an attribute of postsecondary institutions is widely embraced. But as the United States becomes more racially diverse and students of color enroll in college at higher rates, a deeper engagement of the concepts, theories, and recommendations offered in this volume will be crucial."

- Estela Mara Bensimon, Professor of Higher Education and Co-Director, Center for Urban Education, University of Southern California

"This ASHE Reader builds upon the two previous editions in its choice of topics and presentation of significant scholarship on race, racism, and racial diversity. This collection provides readers with a firm foundation for understanding racial and ethnic diversity in colleges and universities. It is a must read for scholars and practitioners of higher education."

- Jeffrey F. Milem, Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, University of Arizona College of Education

"This edition represents an impressive body of literature on the most compelling issues concerning racial and ethnic diversity in higher education. Readers will see a chronological progression of critical discourse on access, student and faculty experiences, leadership, policy, and economics. The ultimate goal when drawing implications from this book is to hold colleges and universities more accountable for fulfilling the promise of being inclusive places for everyone."

- Christine A. Stanley, Vice President/Associate Provost for Diversity and Professor of Higher Education Administration, Texas A&M University

"The 54 chapters in this volume expand knowledge regarding the effects of race and ethnicity on students, staff, and faculty in higher education, as well as in larger social contexts. Harper and Hurtado have included associate editors who represent various areas of expertise. The blend of new perspectives from early career scholars and evolving thoughts from their senior colleagues contribute greatly to our ongoing reflection and understanding of race and racial diversity."

- Frances K. Stage, Professor of Higher Education, New York University

"Did we reach a post-racial America in 2008? Are race and ethnicity no longer factors determinative of a person's experiences in U.S. higher education? This ASHE Reader comes at a critical juncture in our history and provides students and practitioners with a well-balanced, yet comprehensive collection of readings from which to understand the dynamics of race on college and university campuses. It should be required reading for current and future leaders in higher education."

- Anthony Lising Antonio, Associate

Professor and Associate Director, Stanford Institute for Higher Education Research, Stanford University
