PHILIP ALDERSLADE began working on the identification of octocorals nearly 30 years ago when he was a graduate research assistant in the Zoology Department at the University of Queensland. He continued to specialize in this field while working for the Roche Research Institute of Marine Phamacology in Sydney during the 1970s and as the Curator of Coelenterates at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin; a post he has held since 1981. His research has gained him an MSc and a PhD from James Cook University. He is considered a world authority in octocoral taxonomy.
