This biographical dictionary is an indispensable research tool for information about the prominent persons of the past seven decades in China. Yuwu Song is Chinese studies librarian at the Library of Congress. He lives in Germantown, Maryland.

This volume lists noteworthy persons who have had an influence in the People’s Republic of China, which was established in 1949. Communist Party members form the vast majority of the people profiled in this book, but there are some references to artists, poets, and even athletes, such as NBA star Yao Ming. Although there are some critiques of luminaries like Mao Ze-dong and Deng Xiaoping, they tend to be fairly mild and gloss over any criticism.
