Grade 6 Up-- There is a crying need for well-written books for young adults on this subject. They need the facts, and not just for reports. They need information to help them understand what happens to people--themselves or others--at the hands of confused and destructive adults. This volume is filled with facts about both physical and sexual abuse, but readers will have a difficult time pulling information from the clinical and obtuse prose. Check seems unaware that his readers are not adults. His text cites medical journals and instructional videotapes as authorities; the voices of young victims and their families are never heard. The most useful part of the book is the excellent list of child-help organizations. A book that does offer emotional support and insight--but few statistics--to teenagers concerned about sexual abuse is Helen Benedict's Safe, Strong, and Streetwise (Little, 1987). --Carolyn Polese, Gateway Community School, Arcata, CA
