Language Notes:
Text: German, Danish (translation)
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 5Because of its length, subtlety, and allegorical nature, The Snow Queen it rough going for many children. Here Bell has abridged and retold the tale in a way that distills the essence of the story and clarifies much that is vague in the original without harming its beauty. Here it becomes less an allegorical story and more a folktale like Grimm's ``The Seven Ravens'' or ``The Six Swans,'' in which the love and efforts of a young girl free from evil enchantment someone she loves. Watts' colored pencil illustrations are in subdued colors. They have a primitive folk quality about them which is in keeping with the tone of the retelling. The one misstep is that Watts shows Gerda being attacked by the Snow Queen's vanguard of snowflakes which are so cold that they have the bite of animals. Bell's text does not include this scene, so the picture of Gerda being confronted by snowflakes with wolves and bears inside them may cause momentary confusion for young readers. A minor flaw in a book that will serve as a good introduction to this particular tale and to Andersen in general.Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library
