MARIO VARGA5 LLO5A was born in Peru in 1936; he had a scholarship to study in Madrid in 1958 and went on to live in Paris, His first story collection, The Cubs and Other Stories, was published in 1959. Vargas Llosa's reputation grew with the appearance of The Time of the Hero in 1963, though the Peruvian military publicly burned a thousand copies of the book. He continued to live abroad until 1986, returning to Lima just before the restoration of democratic rule. Always politically outspoken, Mario Vargas Llosa served as president of PEN, an international organization which champions the rights of journalists and authors, from 1976 to 1979. He headed the commission appointed by the Peruvian government to investigate the massacre of eight journalists in the Andes in 1983. Mario Vargas Llosa has produced critical studies of Garcia Márquez, Flaubert, Sartre, and Camus, as well as of the roots of contemporary fiction, He has received virtually every important international literary award for his fiction. inventory #15419.
