"I am going to suggest that the culminating contribution of the second millennium, the defining characteristic of the twentieth century, and the most important source of energy for the immediate future is the emergence of women, the beginning of the recognition of the full personhood of half the human family", writes Sandra Schneiders in the introduction to the 2000 Madeleva Lecture, a series that has been as groundbreaking as it has been thought provoking.

Writing with her characteristic clarity, foresightedness and intelligence, the author examines some of the deeply transformative effects of feminism on both twentieth-century America and the post-conciliar church, and explores how a Gospel-informed feminism can offer a new vision of humanity, church and world for a new century. This 2000 Madeleva lecture will lay the groundwork for a discussion called Convergence 2000 to be held at St. Mary's College the day following the lecture. All previous Madeleva lecturers will meet to collaborate on a "Statement for Women in the Twenty-First Century", which is sure to be widely publicized.

About the Author:
Sandra M. Schneiders, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Monroe, MI), holds an STL in patristics from the Institut Catholique, Paris, and an STD in scripture and spirituality from the Gregorian University, Rome. The author of several books, she is currently professor of New Testament and spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.
From Library Journal:
In these lectures, which provide a broad survey of the influence of feminism on society and the Church, Schneiders (New Testament and spirituality, Jesuit Sch. of Theology and the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA) describes feminism as a movement toward structurally determined equality through self-possession, agency, and self-determination, which brings change in gender relations and new images of women as athletes and as scholars. "Recognition of the other, equality, mutuality, relationality, interdependence, and cooperation are beginning to appear as a human way of being," she writes. These values, she shows, have influenced the Church in many areas of ministry, liturgy, and scholarship. They have also helped people envision a more democratic organization, an area pioneered by women's religious orders, which has empowered individuals and wrested control of women's lives from priests and bishops, affecting both liturgy and jobs. Schneiders proposes that challenges for the future include transcending dualism and developing prophetic leadership in a rapidly changing world. The ideas in this well-written text are sound, well reasoned, and grounded in experience. Recommended for seminary and public libraries.
