About the Author:

Martin Buber (1878 1965), is among the foremost twentieth-century philosophers of human relations and Jewish thought. He is best known for his revival of popular interest in Hasidism and his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou and I-It relationships. His work on Hasidic thought, Zionism and religious philosophy continues to influence both the academic study of Judaism and religious thinking more broadly. He also inspired the trend toward neo-Hasidism among modern Jews. His books include I and Thou, Tales of the Hasidim, On Judaism and many others.

The late Nahum N. Glatzer was Lown Professor of Judaic Studies, Brandeis University and University Professor, Boston University.

Mendes-Flohr is professor of Jewish thought and an associate of the Franz Rosenzweig Center for German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Harry Zohn is professor of German language and literature at Brandeis University. He is the translator of "Max Weber: A Biography "written by Marianne Weber and recently reissued by Transaction Publishers.

Winston was born in Minneapolis. He was educated at the Northup School and Folwell Junior High School. California became the family's home in 1959 and in 1962 he graduated from Glendale High. Later he attended San Jose State University and San Francisco State University, which awarded him a bachelor's degree in Semiotics in 1976. Between San Jose State and San Francisco State, he went to sea with the U.S. Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam conflict, serving as a deck-seaman and quartermaster for about 26 months.
