From Booklist:
More than 800 British writers of the last two centuries are profiled in concise entries in these two volumes. Both volumes begin with introductory essays by the general editors and continue with author time lines, alphabetically arranged entries, selected bibliographies, and indexes. Each article sets its subject in context, and entries on authors awarded "major" status also include brief critical analyses of one or more individual works. In addition to the entries on individual writers, each volume also includes articles on key literary terms or movements: for example, in the nineteenth-century volume there are short essays on romanticism and the Oxford and Pre-Raphaelite movements, and in the twentieth-century volume there are pieces on imagism, the Bloomsbury Group, and the Theater of the Absurd. Articles are often enhanced with suggestions for further reading.

Entrants include poets, essayists, playwrights, and novelists. The range of authors represented is wide and embraces not only the familiar names found in literature survey classes, such as James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, G. B. Shaw, and Anthony Trollope, but many "popular" authors like Agatha Christie, Ian Fleming, and Rafael Sabatini. Children's authors are also given their due, with articles on J. M. Barrie, A. A. Milne, Beatrix Potter, and J. K. Rowling, to name a few. Although most of those included count one of the British Isles as their birthplace, there are many representatives from countries that are part of the British Commonwealth, among them Margaret Atwood, J. M. Coetzee, Michael Ondaatje, and Salman Rushdie. Current literary stars like Martin Amis, Roddy Doyle, Ian McEwan, and Zadie Smith are also included.

The writing is clear and straightforward, and each article presents an overview of the life and works of its subject. Both the suggestions for further reading and the selected bibliographies feature fairly recent, easily available titles. Libraries serving high-school and college students will find this a useful source, as will readers' advisors or anyone looking for a quick course on the last two centuries of Brit lit. RBB

From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up--Each volume in this set contains short essays about important writers of the 19th or the 20th century from William Blake to Zadie Smith. More than 800 poets, novelists, playwrights, essayists, and other writers from Great Britain as well as the former British Empire are represented. Articles vary in length from a few hundred words to several pages and includes birth and death dates, genre, and information on the subject's childhood, education, occupations, private life, influences, work, and prizes or honors. For major writers there are critical analyses, quotes, or excerpts from important works. Each volume in Encyclopedia contains an "Authors' Timeline," a "Selected Bibliography," and an extensive index. Compared to the entries in the "British Writers Series" (Scribner's), these articles are shorter and less informative, but students will find them useful for fast facts and as a starting point for research.--Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA
