Grade 3-5-- Want to pet a porcupette? Not according to Sherrow, who has written this remarkable introduction to the porcupine and its offspring, the porcupette. Children who do come in contact with the animal's quills will need pliers; that is just one of the interesting bits of information that the book offers about the ``walking pincushion'' of nature. Also included are discussions of physical features and abilities, eating habits, enemies, breeding, and even porcupines as pets. The text is lively and informative; the full-color photographs are wonderful. A useful pronouncing glossary and short but helpful index are included.
