Robert G. Ousterhout is Professor in the Department of the History of Art and Director of the Center for Ancient Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Robert Ousterhout challenges the commonly accepted notion that the rock-cut settlements of Cappadocia primarily housed enclaves of Christian monks living in the wilderness. Instead, he proposes that the settlement at Çanli Kilise was a fully fledged town, with mansions and hovels, as well as barns, wine presses, and cemeteries.
