The four volumes of this biographical resource cover the lives of 400 prominent Europeans, focusing on "explorers, monarchs, heads of state, diplomats, political and military leaders, and social reformers" since 1450. The work is truly European in scope and includes important figures from eastern Europe and czarist and Soviet Russia. All entries are listed alphabetically and follow a standard format: a basic chronology, a brief narrative detailing significant activities, an overview of biographical sources, and an evaluation of principal sources. Entries for highly significant individuals also evaluate primary sources, pertinent fictional works, related sources, and major museums, landmarks, and societies connected with the subject. The biographical sources are in English, unless such titles are unavailable, and microfilm collections of primary sources in the United States are noted. For the most part the narratives are well written and objective. Although some notable figures are sadly absent, the Guide is admirable, and its scope is bolstered by a useful set of maps and genealogical charts. The set will be rounded out by four more volumes dealing with scientists, philosophers, political theorists, theologians, popes, artists, writers, and musicians. This solid biographical resource is suitable for all undergraduate libraries.
