The summary of the book's content advises that this "solid block of limestone" with an area of only 10 square miles remained virtually isolated until the early 19th century, delaying change and giving its residents some unique characteristics.Quarrying the limestone resource was the dominant industry for many hundreds of years, with diversions for the males included plundering shipwrecks and smuggling. The women too were independent, managing the agricultureal enterprises and gaining land-owning right unknown in other parts of Great Britain. They were also said to not take a husband until they became pregnant. Other aspects of it history included a large prison establishment, a naval base,and an important role in two world wars. Stuart Morris has provided a fascinating account of this historic location, its people and places. First published in 1985 with this first reprint the following year, 159 pages including five appendices and index, lavishly illustrated with photos, art and drawings with three maps.
