About the Author:

Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta. His vast and innovative oeuvre, in almost every literary genre, was begun at an early age. In 1912, during a visit to England, his religious lyrics in his own English translations were admired by W.B. Yeats, and in 1913 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Thereafter for the rest of his life he was accorded the status of a prophet and guru. His compassionate wholeness of outlook, as respectful of modern science as of India's spiritual heritage, has imparted a civilised ideal that has not been overturned. He died
