From Library Journal:
On the quincentenary of Spain's expulsion of the Jews, an important but seldom analyzed event in European history, Strom ( The Last Jews of Eastern Europe , Philosophical, 1986) offers a pictorial study of the remnants of this once-dominant Sephardic culture, now relegated to far-flung communities established by the exiles and their descendants. The photojournalist toured Mediterranean Europe and Turkey to obtain his pictures, which he groups by nation and city, introducing each with an essay on the general history of the Jewish community in that location. Unfortunately, he adds few personal observations or details about the subjects he photographed. The result is as uninvolving as a stranger's vacation album: a series of unfamiliar buildings, cemeteries, and people needing elucidation. What should have been a fascinating work proves instead a mildly interesting curiosity. Not a necessary purchase.

From Publishers Weekly:
Booker, a Philadelphia-based journalist, has done a marvelous demoliton job on the tired stereotypes of the Jewish American Princess, the guilt-producing Jewish mother, the "over-intellectual, arrogant, dependent" Jewish male, etc. She argues that calm acceptance of such stereotypes by Jews who are uneasy about their ethnic identity and who crave the majority's acceptance insidiously perpetrates anti-Semitism. In the author's damning analysis, Joan Rivers exudes Jewish self-contempt, Phil Donahue subtly reinforces anti-Jewish stereotypes and Woody Allen exploits roles that "feed . . . what people need to believe about Jewish men." This compelling, often explosive psychohistory of Jewish self-hatred assesses Hannnah Arendt's obtuseness in the face of Nazi evil, I. F. Stone's hatred of Israel, Lillian Hellman's consistently negative images of Jews and the bias of feminists who single out Judaism for its reputed inherent sexism.
