In 1981 and 1982, Donald was disabled with an illness called vasculitis. It affected his heart, lungs, kidneys, spleen, and blood vessels. While convalescing at home for nearly two years, he was going bonkers with boredom. So he bought a how-to book on typing and he bought a typewriter and began teaching himself how to type. Then he enrolled in a home-study course for writing children's stories. Today his vasculitis is in remission and his passion for writing thrives. He's the author of dozens of children's picture books and three young adult novels.
