About the Author:
W.S. Merwin is the author of more than fifteen books of poetry, including The River of Sound, which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1999. He also has published nearly twenty books of translation, including Dante's Purgatorio; numerous plays; and four books of prose, including The Lost Upland, his memoir of life in the south of France. The recipient of numerous literary honors, he is a former Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets and currently is a judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets. He lives and works in Hawaii.

Editor Mark Irwin's most recent book is White City. Other books include The Halo of Desire; Against the Meanwhile: 3 Elegies; and Quick Now, Always. He is the recipient of a "Discovery"/ The Nation Award, two Pushcart Prizes, and National Endowment for the Arts and Fullbright Fellowships, among other awards. He lives with his family in Denver, and he spends part of each year on a wilderness ranch in southern Colorado.
