Young Dario Ribeira, his brother Marco and their sister Amelia have had a happy childhood, despite living in poverty. But when recession hits Lisbon and their father cannot continue with his business, the family are evicted from their home. Then their father disappears and tragedy strikes when their mother dies giving birth. Amelia is adopted but the boys are sent to a strictly run orphanage where they are deprived of any love. For Dario, his social studies teacher becomes his idol, and his interest in Portugal's economic and political problems begins. But the threat of being sent to a different orphanage on his twelfth birthday and being separated from Marco prompts Dario into hatching a plan to run away. The homeless boys turn to petty crime in order to survive on the streets. Then their lives are changed forever when they join a gang of street urchins and the Borgata is formed - a group that would change the history of Lisbon in a way that no one could imagine.
