Ossyane est un homme complexe et douloureux, rencontré par un narrateur - qui pourrait être Amin Maalouf lui-même - alors qu'il est au soir de sa vie, et qu'il se trouve à Paris pour un mystérieux rendez-vous. C'est une longue et belle histoire que celle d'Ossyane, qui traverse les cinquante dernières années en passant par Beyrouth, Haïfa et la France, mêlant la Résistance et le conflit israélo-arabe. Ossyane, donc, venu du Liban et qui, par le hasard de ses études à Paris, devient un héros de la Résistance. Il rencontrera Clara, une jeune juive, qu'il épousera à la Libération et dont il aura une fille. Mais une guerre est à peine terminée que l'autre - celle du Proche-Orient déchiré - commence... Ossyane et Clara seront donc séparés par l'histoire. Ils seront séparés, aussi, par la folie qui s'empare d'Ossyane. Ce n'est qu'à la dernière page du roman qu'ils se retrouveront.
