Poetry was as important to Raymond Carver as his short stories and this collection sounds a key-note of enjoyment in the present rather than regret for the past. In the introduction, his widow gives a moving account of his last days, his love of Chekhov and the poems of Czeslaw Milosz.

From Library Journal:
Though Carver is generally acknowledged to be a master of the short story, his first published work was poetry, and this collection, his last work, was completed shortly before his untimely death. His poetry is as recognizably his own as his stories and like them evokes depths of meaning beneath a surface simplicity. In her moving introduction, Carver's widow, writer Tess Gallagher, notes how often a particular poem calls to mind a corresponding story, and the reverse is also true. Indeed, to know Carver by his prose is to know him only partially. Master at illuminating those often mundane moments that starkly dramatize entire lives, Carver was also master at creating mood, and many of these poems have a striking lyrical intensity, especially when Carver unflinchingly faces death while celebrating life. A coda to a remarkable literary career.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition of Raymond Carver's final book of poetry - published in the UK in the year after his death. Published in the USA in the same year by Atlantic Monthly Press, Boston. ***Near fine in dark-blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Edges of text-block slightly marked, mainly at the top and fore- edge. Internally fine with no inscriptions, clean with no marks or creases. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's price of £11.00 net. The dustwrapper is complete with no tears or chips, but there is some scuffing and creasing to the edges. Some small areas of loss to the surface paper of the dustwrapper. No fading to the sun-sensitive red colour of the titles on the spine of the dustwrapper. The dustwrapper is clean. ***158 pages. 224mm x 144mm. ***'Poetry Book Society Special Commendation. "I began as a poet. My first publication was a poem. So I suppose on my tombstone I'd be very pleased if they put 'Poet and short story writer and occasional essayist'. In that order" [Raymond Carver] ***The keynote in Raymond Carver's last collection of poetry, which he completed shortly before he died, is a delight in the gift of the present, rather than regret for the past. And in her revealing and moving introduction his widow, the writer Tess Gallagher, recounts his last days, his growing fascination with the poetic possibilities of Chekhov's stories and the way in which this life-affirming collection gradually and naturally came together'. [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ****First impression of the first UK edition, in very good condition. Surprisingly uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7911x
