About the Author:

John S. Major is the author or editor of more than two dozen books, ranging from serious scholarly works on early Chinese intellectual history to an illustrated children's book on the Silk Route, from a collection of Tibetan Buddhist folktales to a study of his family's Huguenot roots in colonial New Jersey; he is co-editor of an anthology of world poetry and co-author of two books on the joys of reading. He began his career as a professor of East Asian history at Dartmouth College and later became a senior editor at the Book-of-the-Month Club. Now retired, he continues his research and writing as an independent scholar based in New York City.

Grade 7-12-- Packed with data and often as entertaining as an armchair travelogue, Major's highly readable text provides an excellent resource on this little-known part of the world. He has unearthed a wealth of information on all aspects of Malaysia; topics include history, culture, geography, climate, religion, and the arts, as well as unique ecological, economic, political, and social problems. A section on daily life features profiles of a variety of citizens such as a Chinese grandfather, a Brunei housewife, and a college student. The depth of research is apparent in the number of literary allusions and curious facts the author has discovered. They are often set apart by "fact boxes," containing miscellaneous lore on everything from orangutans to head hunters. More than 60 black-and-white photographs, some of which are disappointingly dark and unclear, are interspersed throughout; the maps are quite helpful. An annotated bibliography broken down by chapters and an extensive index are appended.
