Drawing on the latest research evidence, the authors of this textbook examine the extent to which men and women actually differ, and the origins and implications of the differences, in physical development, sexual experience, emotional expression, mental health, aggression, power, family life, work and achievement. They consider, too, general issues in sex and gender research: stereotypes and common-sense beliefs, problems of measurement and objectivity in the social sciences, the interaction of nature and nurture, developmental pathways, and social change.

Book Description:
Sex and Gender 2ed is a substantially revised edition of a classic text. Adopting a balanced approach to the often controversial study of sex differences, the authors introduce the reader to the fundamental questions relating to sex and gender in an accessible way. Drawing on the latest research, new developments are explored such as the rise of evolutionary psychology and the influence of Social Role Theory as well as new psychoanalytic and ethno-methodological approaches which have all contributed to a greater understanding of the complex nature of masculinity and femininity.
About the Author:
John Archer is Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire. His research interests are aggression, violence, sex and gender, and grief. He is the author of a number of books, including The Nature of Grief (1999), Ethology and Human Development (1992) and The Behavioural Biology of Aggression (1988). He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and President-Elect of the International Society for Research on Aggression.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Cambridge University Press American Edition. An earlier edition was published by Penguin Books in England. You can see the covers in the photos. They look very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There is only a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges have a small number of little specks. They have no impact on the actual pages. The blank front end paper has a thin tan vertical line next to its juncture with the front inside cover. The rear inside cover is very slightly tanned. The blank rear end paper has a tiny tan spot and a little crease at its bottom corner. The binding of the book is solid. There is a thin space at the juncture between pages 160 and 161. These two pages are at the middle of the book and one might suspect that the book was left lying open there. Nevertheless, both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom, and all the other pages in the book are nicely, tightly bound at their junctures, as are the covers. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in pretty good shape. It has a little crinkling off the top and bottom edges of the spine The previous owner also forgot to put sunscreen on the spine. Still, it changed into a pretty color. Some of those similarly colored lines you see on the rear cover appear as well to have been affected by exposure to sunlight. On the rear cover there is a little nick/tear that you should be able to see in the third photo. There are no edge tears on the jacket. The flaps are in very good condition, no issues. The jacket is not priced or clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. I have priced this book well below the few other dust jacketed non-library hardcovers for sale on the Internet. From the jacket: 'Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in the societal and biological differences between the sexes. 'Psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, and biologists have undertaken new and complex studies in an effort to answer old and complex questions about the nature of men and women and their place in society. But how are we to understand and evaluate their work? Sex and Gender helps us to do so. Drawing on the latest research evidence, John Archer and Barbara Lloyd examine the extent to which men and women actually differ, and the origins and implications of the differences, in physical development, sexual experience, emotional expression, mental health, aggression, power, family life, work, and achievement. They consider, too, some general issues in sex and gender research: stereotypes and commonsense beliefs, problems of measurement and objectivity in the social sciences, the interaction of nature and nurture, developmental pathways, and social change. The authors' sensitive and intelligent analysis will compel the attention of a wide audience.'. Seller Inventory # 004884
