Published on the occasion of the artist's first exhibition in Asia, which commenced at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa, Japan held from July 2 through August 25, 2005, and travelled on to Seoul in 2006. Presents, after a long hiatus, Matthew Barney's "Drawing Restraint 9". The turning point of his "Drawing Restraint" Series. He began the Series in 1987, when he was 20 years old, a Pre-Med student at Yale University. Barney's interest in the body can surely be traced back to his background in biology and medicine. Instead of studying other bodies, he turned his own into his subject. His body is the starting point of the transformation and change that have characterized his oeuvre. Barney became an artist (instead of a scientist) because at a critical point, he lost faith in science and evolution (without losing faith in the body, change, and transformation), and re-imagined the cosmos as being in constant flux. The first eight volumes of "Drawing Restraint" show him becoming a half-man, half-animal being. "Drawing Restraint 9" takes this idea to its farthest limit. Japan (where the idea of transformation is rooted in Nature Worship, derisively called "animism" in the West) was heaven-sent for Barney because the insight behind "Drawing Restraint" is incompatible with a Western tradition that is dominated by the idea of one God. That is why Barney dropped the project, and it is only now that he is able not only to complete but fulfill it. Filmed on the whaling ship "Nisshin Maru", "Drawing Restraint 9" is a love story with a surprise ending: A man (Barney) and a woman (Bjork, the rock star and his real-life partner), dressed in elaborate furry kimonos, board the whaling ship as guests to a tea ceremony. They fall in love, make love, and as petroleum jelly floods the room, carve and eat each other up with knives. In the process, they destroy themselves as humans and become fully transformed as whales. The dramatization is graphic in a clinical way, like Western surgery; lyrical and exquisite, like Japanese calligraphy. "Barney belongs to the world of transformational tales, of pre-Christian mythology and alchemy, which feature the transmission between material and immaterial. Barney's artistic attitude lies in the belief that art functions as a form of resistance against the power structure that constantly attempts to stabilize matters" (Yuko Hasegawa). The monograph also includes "Drawing Restraint 10" and "Drawing Restraint 11". If "Cremaster" is Matthew Barney's tribute to the greatest Western art thus far (German Romanticism and Wagner), "Drawing Restraint 9" is his tribute to Japan, the greatest artistic culture in Asia. "The most important American artist of his generation" (The New York Times). An absolute "must-have" title for Matthew Barney collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Matthew Barney. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American artists of our. Bookseller Inventory # 9865
