The Gospels report a triple leave-taking of his followers by Jesus, one on the Mount of Olives, another at Bethany, another at the last supper at J erusalem. The leave-taking on the Mount of Olives is marked by teaching and admonition, that at the Bethany meal by the last cordially serious sociality, that at the last supper at Jerusalem, the crown of the farewell, by an intenser form of both these characteristics. At Jerusalem, the feast of friendship became the festival of the new religion, which distributed its gifts, revealed its prospects, and made known its requirements. When we consider everything, we understand why Jesus withdrew; and we readily give up any prejudice in favour of finding a leave-taking only in the farewell addresses in John's Gospel. A--On The Mount Of Olives. According to the Gospels, according to Matthew most distinctly, Jesus forsook--as indeed his closing address in which he finally broke with the Pharisees compelled him to do--the temple buildings; and with his band of followers he struck into the road over the Kidron to the Mount of Olives and Bethany.1 Looking back, they would see opposite to them the lofty hill of the temple standing forth as grandly and overpoweringly as on the first hopeful day of the entry, like the tower of the parable majestically rising from the terraces of the courts to the gold-glittering marble heights of the House of God.2 This is the situation to which the 1 Matt. xxiv. 1; Mark xiii.
