American operatic contralto Louise Homer (1871-1947) signed and inscribed this Aime DuPont Studio photograph of her with a laurel wreath in her hair in 1914. Homer was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1900 to 1919 and from 1927 to 1929. She was also an active opera singer in Boston, Chicago, and California and recorded extensively for Victor Records and Columbia Records in the early decades of the20th century. Homer sang a varied repertoire at the Met which encompassed parts from a variety of musical periods and languages. The oval photograph is signed in the negative by the photographic studio "Copyright A. DuPont 1909" and embossed below the photo on the mount "Aime DuPont 574 Fifth Ave., New York". DuPont, at the urging of his American-born wife Etta Greer DuPont, emigrated to New York City where he achieved such success that he moved his premises to 574 Fifth Ave. in 1886. DuPont concentrated his business on celebrity portraiture: opera singers, actresses, dancers, authors, and musicians. He became the first choice photographer of the newly formed Metropolitan Opera. After Aime's death in 1900, his wife kept the studio operating under her husband's name, and a generation of young stage people grew up thinking that Etta was Aime DuPont. Since this photograph was taken in 1909, Etta was the photographer. Overall 7" x 5"; oval portrait is 5 3/4" x 4 1/4". Condition: There is a barely perceptible clear stain in the left blank margin partially impinging on photograph (not affecting autograph, inscription or Homer's image); otherwise very good.
