About this Item
55 AXIS with The Royal Canadian Regiment 1939-1945; by Major Strome Galloway, E.D., with a foreword by Lieut.-Col. J. M. Houghton, O.B.E. Officer Commanding The Royal Canadian Regiment, Canadian Army, Active Force; copyright 1946 in Canada and Countries subscribing to the Beane Convention; printed in Canada by Provincial Publishing Co. Ltd., Montreal, Que. Ownership signatures of two soldiers: SF36600 Cpl. McDonald E. J. and SC122002 Pte. G. R. Allen. From the Foreword It is with considerable pleasure that I write the Foreword to this new story about The Royal Canadian Regiment. Although this book is not an official Regimental History, nor to be looked upon as such, it does provide a truthful picture of the life and deeds of the many gallant warriors who made up The Regiment during the war years here recalled. Why the book is called 55 AXIS is noted in the front of the book The route followed, or more properly, the axis of advance of units in the field was picketed along its course with signs bearing the tactical number of the unit or formation concerned. The tactical number of The Royal Canadian Regiment was 55 . The book follows the Regiment from the staert through the finish of World War II. Appendix I Details of all of the Commanding Officers; Appendix II Itinerary of the Regiment through the war, including Sicily, Italy and Europe. Then there is the Roll of Honour , those killed in action or died of wounds, and then those who died accidently or of natural causes. The book has some photographs and the end papers have maps of the two theatres of war Italy and Northern Europe. This book, 232 pages, is in very good condition. The front cover is faded and the extremities of the boards are scuffed and a bit warn. But overall the book is in very sound condition, with no foxing or discolouration. A very nice copy of a very scarce early history of one on Canada s most famous Regiments. Seller Inventory # 2115
